![]() | A frequently asked question, "What is a muscle knot and why do they occur"? Muscle knots are one of the most common occurrences in the human body and they are caused by repetitive use of a muscle. Some people become confused because they "don't do much" and still they have knots and muscle tension. Knots can be created by simply walking a lot, or sitting still with the hips and body in one position and the arms outstretched in front of a computer. |
The long bands of muscles are compiled of hundreds of muscle fibres. When a limb or any part of the body is held in position or used for frequent actions, the heads of the tiny contracted muscle fibres might, at times, not release. Over time more of these fibres remain in a contracted position. The result is what we refer to as a knot. Also, this can occur when there has been a sudden fall or jolt to the body.
What we have seen is that massage techniques can reduce and release the knots and allow a person to return to a state of relaxation.
What many people don't know is that some of these knots can be tiny or large, and can be the source of feeling of pain. This is then called a trigger point and trigger points are documented to have a specific pain pattern. For example, trigger point under the posterior skull might create a referred pain to the location of your eyes or behind your eyes!!
To experience a release of your muscular knots, book an appointment with me and walk away with some self-care tips and a relaxed state of being.
